Gingoog City, August 19, 2024 – The Rotary Club of Cagayan de Oro City East Urban (RCC CDO East Urban) successfully conducted its 14th annual Bookgiving event, benefiting 550 Grade 1 students from seven selected schools in Gingoog City.
Each student received a coloring book generously donated by the Johnny L. Motoomull Foundation, along with a box of crayons and snacks provided by RCC CDO East Urban. The event was a joyful occasion, with students eagerly participating and expressing their gratitude for the new learning materials.
The Bookgiving tradition began in 2010, inspired by the late Hon. Johnny L. Motoomull, Jr., a former City Councilor and member of the Rotary Club of Gingoog City. On his 60th birthday, Hon. Motoomull sought to create a lasting legacy by providing educational resources to children in remote areas who might otherwise lack access to such materials. His vision became the foundation of the Bookgiving project, which has continued annually even after his passing.
Hon. Motoomull’s family has remained deeply committed to this cause, ensuring that his legacy lives on through the continued success of the Bookgiving project. His wife and daughter, who are now members of RCC CDO East Urban, have been instrumental in maintaining and expanding the initiative. Their collaboration with RCC CDO East Urban has made this yearly event a significant part of the club’s service projects.
This year’s Bookgiving aligns with one of Rotary’s key areas of focus: Basic Education and Literacy. By providing these educational resources, RCC CDO East Urban reaffirms its commitment to supporting the education and development of young learners in underserved communities.
